That’s why having a solid plan in place for your pets is just as important as having one for the rest of your household.

At Paws Up!, we’re here to help you make sure your furry family members are safe, secure, and ready, just in case. Whether you live downtown, in Goose Creek, North Charleston, or out toward the islands, here’s what Charleston pet parents need to know about hurricane preparedness.

When Is Hurricane Season in Charleston?

Hurricane season in Charleston runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak storm activity typically occurring between mid-August and late October. During this time, tropical systems from the Atlantic can bring heavy rain, powerful winds, and flooding to our coastal communities.

With our proximity to the water and history of storm impacts, Charleston pet owners should always stay one step ahead. That means having a clear plan that includes evacuation routes, emergency contacts, and pet-specific supplies.

How to Prepare Your Pets for Hurricane Season

Pet emergency planning might seem overwhelming, but with the right steps, you can be ready to go at a moment’s notice. These preparations can make a significant difference in how well your pets handle the stress and uncertainty of an emergency situation.

Make a Pet-Specific Hurricane Plan

Your pets are part of your family and they need a place in your emergency plan. Here’s what to consider:

  • Know Your Evacuation Routes

Plan multiple evacuation routes from your home in case roads are blocked. Familiarize yourself with pet-friendly evacuation shelters throughout Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties.

  • Secure Pet-Friendly Accommodations

Not all hotels or shelters allow pets. Call in advance to confirm their policies and keep a list of backup options just in case.

  • Update ID Tags and Microchips

Double-check that your pet’s ID tags are up to date with your current contact info. If your pets aren’t microchipped yet, now’s the time. Microchipping is one of the most effective ways to reunite with a lost pet after a storm.

  • Make a Contact List

Include your vet, a trusted friend or neighbor, and emergency pet care resources in the Charleston area. If you need to evacuate quickly, you’ll be glad you have those numbers ready.

Build a Hurricane Go-Bag for Your Pets

Put together a pet emergency kit that’s easy to grab and go. It should include:

  • At least 5 days’ worth of food and bottled water

  • Medications and copies of your pet’s medical records

  • Leashes, harnesses, and secure carriers or crates to safely transport your pets

  • Waste bags, litter and tray (for cats), and cleaning supplies

  • Comfort items like a favorite toy or blanket

  • A recent photo of your pet (in case you’re separated)

Pack everything in a waterproof bin or bag and store it somewhere easily accessible, like by the front door or in your car trunk during hurricane season.

Get Your Pets Comfortable With Travel

Don’t wait until the last minute to introduce your pet to their crate or the car. These small steps make a big difference:

  • Crate Training: Let your pet explore their carrier or crate ahead of time. Make it cozy and reward them with treats to create a positive association.

  • Short Car Trips: Practice by taking your dog (or cat!) on short rides around your neighborhood in their crate or carrier, especially if they’re not used to the car. This will help them feel more at ease during a longer evacuation journey.

  • Seat Belts & Restraints: Make sure your pet is safely secured in the car. It’s the law in South Carolina, and it’s safer for everyone.

Stay Updated With Local Alerts

Charleston and surrounding areas offer emergency alerts that can notify you about evacuations and other storm-related updates. Sign up in advance so you don’t miss important information:

  • Follow the National Hurricane Center

  • Monitor Live 5 News, WCBD News 2, or ABC News 4 Charleston and sign up for notifications

  • Enable push notifications on weather apps like SC Emergency Manager

Knowing what’s coming can give you the time and clarity you need to act fast—especially when pets are part of the plan.

Keep Calm and Keep Your Pets Close

The most important thing during a storm? Stay calm. Your pets will take their cues from you. If you’re stressed, they will be too. Having a plan in place can reduce that anxiety for both of you.

Whether you’re riding out the storm at home or evacuating inland, be sure your pets stay close, secure, and never left behind. Charleston weather can be unpredictable, but your response doesn’t have to be.
